Subtitle: A Community-Focused Transformation

The picturesque village of Dorna, nestled within Grimma's district, is set to welcome a new era with the completion of its modernized village square. This project, a testament to collaboration between local authorities and regional development initiatives, aims to create a vibrant, multifunctional public space that caters to community events, markets, and social gatherings.

Funding and Costs

The project, funded primarily by the "Vital Village Centers" programme under the "Rural Development" directive, accounts for 65% of its costs. The Grimma city council and the local community have also contributed, with the city providing around 32,000 euros. The total cost of the project is estimated to be approximately 180,000 euros, with expenses including landscaping, infrastructure, and sustainable features like energy-efficient lighting and green planting.

Redesign and Development

The redesign process began in March 2025 and has seen the square transformed into an inviting meeting point. Site-appropriate trees have been newly planted, and the area now boasts trees, hedges, seating options, and a pavilion with a grill area. Previously, the square was an unstructured area with a damaged surface and numerous potholes.

The new square is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for everyday use. It features table tennis tables, bike racks, and new parking spaces. Accessibility improvements have been made to ensure the square is usable by people of all ages and mobility levels.

Collaborative Efforts

The GIS-Dienst planning office from Döben, the village community, and the Saxon State Office for Road Construction and Transport have collaborated on this project, due to the proximity to the state road. Many existing conifers, which were dead, were felled as part of the redesign.

Official Inauguration

Mayor Tino Kießig and Uwe Gaitzsch, member of the Döbener local council, will officially inaugurate the square at 5:00 PM. The new town center will be officially handed over on Saturday, August 16, at a colorful village festival. The location of the glass and clothing container is now conveniently located next to the bus stop on the opposite side of the street.

This modernized village square in Grimma's district of Dorna is more than just a public space – it's a gain for all generations, a place for meeting and exchange. An information board provides information about the place and its surroundings, making it an ideal spot for both locals and visitors to learn and connect.

The transformation of Dorna's village square, a collaborative effort between local authorities and regional development initiatives, fosters a lifestyle that caters to the community, offering an inviting home-and-garden setting for events, markets, and social gatherings. This multifunctional public space, costing approximately 180,000 euros, features energy-efficient lighting, lush greenery, table tennis tables, bike racks, and new parking spaces, providing a practical, aesthetically pleasing home environment for the local community.
