Article Title: A Taste of South America and Street Art in Hitchin

In the picturesque town of Hitchin, two establishments have recently caught the attention of locals and visitors alike. The George Pub, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and extensive bar, and Mi Barrio, a South American tapas restaurant that rents the kitchen at The George.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of trying a significant portion of Mi Barrio's menu, which, it should be noted, is on the smaller side, consisting of tapas only. One of the standout dishes was the Tostones Rellenos - a fried plantain bowl filled with 10-hour slow-roasted beef brisket, topped with guacamole and salsa. While it was flavourful and messy to eat, it was a delightful combination of textures and tastes.

The menu also offered a variety of vegetable bites, such as the Padrons Del Jefe - roasted peppers seasoned differently from the classic salt, served with coriander sour cream on the side. The chimichurri verde olives, green olives with pits, covered in a chimichurri and oil, were fresh and flavourful. However, the coriander aioli did not appeal to one of our reviewers.

The yuca fries, despite an odd texture, were enjoyed by Dann, while I found them doughy on the inside and lacking flavour. On the other hand, the corn ribs, known as Costillas de Maiz, were a hit. Coated in butter and parmesan cheese, they were served with a smoky chipotle and sweet pineapple mayonnaise, making for a delightful contrast of flavours.

The pork dish at Mi Barrio was another highlight. Tender with a super crispy top, it came with Colombian sour cream and a white cabbage and radish salad cured with lime, providing a refreshing counterbalance to the rich flavours of the pork.

Meanwhile, The George Pub hosted a one-day Street Art festival, inviting local and regional street artists to showcase their talents. The festival ran from midday to dinnertime, and upon arrival, some paintings were fully completed, while others were in progress. Children were provided with paint bottles and cans to decorate, adding a vibrant touch to the event.

Artists also painted live on panels, creating a lively atmosphere. The specific names of the artists participating in the exhibition are not publicly listed, but their works added a burst of colour and creativity to the pub.

Throughout our visit, the staff at The George Pub were kind and had many regular customers, contributing to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you're in the mood for a taste of South America or a day immersed in street art, Hitchin has something to offer.
