Devoted Educator and Lifelong Learner: Luigi Meneghello
In honour of the 100th birthday of the versatile Italian author Luigi Meneghello, a monumental volume titled "Meneghello 100" has been dedicated to his life and work. The book, available online, is a testament to Meneghello's prolific career, spanning novels, essays, translations, linguistics treatises, and journalism.
Divided into seven sections - 'Diaspora and Homeland', 'Forms of Style', 'Translating', 'Trajectories', 'Connections', 'Educating and Teaching', and 'Essays' - the volume delves into the foundational aspects of Meneghello's books, his cultural identity, and the lessons he left us.
Thirty-eight contributions from various personalities have been collected, discussing Meneghello's work and example from diverse perspectives such as Stylistics, Sound Studies, Ecocriticism, Translation Studies, and approaches like philological, linguistic, sociological, and pedagogical.
One of the three introductory essays, penned by Pietro De Marchi, emphasises the importance and timeliness of Meneghello's writing. De Marchi suggests that Meneghello's writing demonstrates that writing is a function of understanding, and every tiny fragment of experience, if expressed well, contains the essence or core of all that matters.
The volume also tells the story of a group of unconventional student-partisans, the 'small masters', which contributes to understanding the civil war and Resistance in Veneto and elsewhere. The story of these student-partisans also reveals the poverty of Italy at the time, even in areas later reached or overwhelmed by prosperity and too quickly forgetful of what was just yesterday.
The National Committee, established on March 29, 2022, for the centennial celebrations of Luigi Meneghello's birth, has been instrumental in promoting various activities related to Meneghello's work from 2022 to 2024. These activities included conferences, study days, and webinars involving accredited scholars.
Luigi Meneghello, a diasporic and trilingual writer, was fluent in Maladense, Italian, and English. Born in the year 1922 and passing away in 2007, Meneghello's work continues to resonate, especially with the microcosm and provincial town of Malo, which is studied in the volume using the tools of dialectology and sociology.
Understanding Malo, considered the quintessence of Italy, helps understand what Italians are and know. As we celebrate Meneghello's 100th birthday, his work serves as a reminder of the power of words and the importance of understanding our past to shape our future.
