Customs Raid Exposes Widespread Illegal Work in Construction Industry

Customs officers, working with the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), have uncovered numerous violations during a targeted inspection of the construction industry. The operation, led by the Hauptzollamt Schweinfurt, focused on illegal work and employment, with a particular emphasis on the construction sector due to its economic significance and complex regulations.

Last Monday, the Financial Control of Illegal Work of the Customs (FKS) conducted a nationwide inspection, involving 85 officials from the Main Customs Office Schweinfurt. They visited various construction sites across Lower and Upper Franconia, questioning 165 employees. The inspections aimed to ensure employers had registered their employees with the social security office, that no one was fraudulently claiming social benefits, and that minimum wages were being paid.

For foreign employees, the validity of their work permits and residence titles were also checked. This targeted approach is part of the FKS's risk-oriented inspection strategy, designed to reduce the social acceptance of illegal work and detect offenses.

The inspections resulted in the discovery of numerous violations, which are now being investigated further by the customs office in collaboration with the BKA. Further checks are required to address these irregularities and ensure compliance with employment and social security regulations.
