Community of Landshut remains kid-friendly haven

In a forward-looking workshop held at the Old Barracks this week, Mayor Alexander Putz and a diverse group of participants gathered to shape Landshut's second action plan. The new plan aims to improve child participation, enhance educational opportunities, and create safer, more inclusive spaces for children in Landshut.

The upcoming action plan is a testament to the city's commitment to working closely with its youngest residents. As Putz emphasised, "It's crucial that we collaborate with the children and young people who live in Landshut for the implementation of our second action plan."

The workshop, moderated by Cornelia Scharf, director of the Nuremberg Children's Commission, brought together members of the steering group, youth council, city youth council, the "Child-Friendly Municipality" association, municipal employees from various departments, and primary and secondary school teachers.

The development of the second action plan will incorporate numerous ideas that have emerged both within and outside the municipal administration. These ideas have great potential, according to Mayor Putz, who expressed his anticipation for the further implementation of the second action plan, hand in hand with Landshut's youngest residents.

The first action plan, launched in 2019, has seen several successful measures. Accompanied museum visits for children and young people, the establishment and integration of a youth council, neighbourhood walks in the Sanierungsgebiet II Marienplatz-Freyung area, and active involvement in the redesign of playgrounds are just a few examples. Some of these measures, such as the accompanied museum visits, serve as "best practice" examples for other municipalities.

Landshut was awarded the title of "Child-Friendly Municipality" by the eponymous association since August 2022. The association praised Landshut's development into a "beacon municipality". The final report of the three-year implementation phase, including an extension application, will be presented at the end of June.

A second action plan is required for this extension, and the city council unanimously voted to extend the seal and launch a further implementation phase in April. The new action plan is expected to include up to 15 measures.

Mayor Putz praised the participants' work and commitment, stating that the "Child-Friendly Municipality Landshut" is a success story and that the common task now is to consolidate what has been achieved. The city council is expected to decide on the second action plan in spring 2026.

As the second action plan takes shape, Landshut continues to set an example for other municipalities in fostering a child-friendly environment. The collected ideas for the second action plan have the potential to further improve the lives of children and young people in Landshut, and the city council is eager to see the positive impact these measures will have in the coming years.
