Ringing in the Spirit: Frankfurt's New Take on Pentecost City Chimes

Urban bell in the city during Pentecost adopts fresh tone - City bells echo melodiously on Pentecost, introducing a fresh, new tune in the metropolis.

Let's talk about Frankfurt, my friend! This vibrant city is known for its lively offerings, and the Great City Chiming event is no exception. On major religious holidays, you'll hear an orchestrated chime from no less than 50 bells hailing from various churches. This coming Saturday, they'll be ringing a new tune!

This symphony of sound will include bells from ten city center churches, such as the Paulskirche, the Hauptwache's Katharinenkirche, and the Römerberg's Old Nikolaikirche. Not to mention the Imperial Cathedral's nine bells, including the renowned Gloriosa - a four-ton giant!

Time for a Deeper Sound

Prepare for an intense experience! The new Great City Chiming, set to ring from 4:30 to 5:00 PM this Saturday, will be composed by the Ensemble Modern, a collective of international soloists based in Frankfurt. The goal? A more immersive soundscape for your ears.

This annual performance, titled "supra urbem" (Latin for "above the city"), will now play yearly on the Saturday before Pentecost. For the other religious dates, the traditional composition will continue to be heard, first developed in 1954 by Mainzer Glockensachverständiger Paul Smets.

The bells will make their debut individually, starting from the highest pitches. About 15 minutes in, they'll combine, forming the harmonious whole we all know and love.

The background: the idea of a chiming event during Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost was first mooted in 1856. The title "Great City Chiming" was given later.
