Charming countryside dwelling in the "most scenic and undisturbed town within the Cotswolds"
In the heart of the picturesque Cotswold market town of Chipping Campden, a unique opportunity has arisen for property enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The launch this week sees the sale of Kingcombe, a Grade II-listed Arts-and-Crafts home, priced at a guide price of £5.5m.
Chipping Campden, renowned as one of the most beautiful and unspoilt Cotswold towns, is home to the great, Grade I-listed, Perpendicular church of St James. Dating back to the 13th century, it is one of the finest 'wool churches' in the Cotswolds, reflecting the town's rich history rooted in the wool trade.
The wealth of Chipping Campden can be traced back to its thriving wool trade, which, in the early 20th century, led to the town becoming a centre for the Cotswold Arts-and-Crafts movement. This movement found its way into Kingcombe, a substantial main house offering 8,398sq ft of Arts-and-Crafts-inspired accommodation.
Sir Gordon Russell, a modern furniture maker, commissioned the architect Leslie Mansfield to build Kingcombe in 1925. However, it was Russell himself who designed the house, which was completed in 1928. The main house includes a galleried reception hall, five impressive reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room, and six bedroom suites.
Unusually, Kingcombe boasts a 'gardener's room' with a separate kitchen, plant room, and storage, making it an ideal space for those with a green thumb. There is also an additional seventh bedroom and a bathroom in the home. The home office/studio and two one-bedroom flats are also part of Kingcombe.
Kingcombe's gardens and grounds include a wild swimming pool, a tennis court, and a quaint folly tower, providing ample space for relaxation and recreation. The property is located less than a mile from the centre of Chipping Campden, offering easy access to the town's amenities while maintaining a secluded feel.
Pevsner described Chipping Campden's High Street as 'the best piece of townscape in Gloucestershire, arguably one of the best in England'. This testament to the town's charm underscores the allure of Kingcombe, which offers a chance to become a part of this historic and picturesque community.
Joint agents for Kingcombe are Rupert Wakley of Jackson-Stops in Chipping Campden and David Henderson of Savills in Stow-on-the-Wold. Interested parties are invited to contact them for more information.
