Stadionbad Bremen Celebrates 100 Years of Summer Fun

The Stadionbad, a beloved outdoor swimming pool complex in Bremen, Germany, is gearing up for a week of festivities to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

Originally named Badeanstalt am Peterswerder, the Stadionbad opened its doors to the public on August 8, 1925, marking the beginning of a century-long tradition of summer fun. The pool was dug out entirely by hand, without the aid of modern excavators, and quickly became a popular destination for locals seeking a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

In the same year, the increasing pollution of the Weser river forced the closure of the nearby bathing establishment, Wagenbrett, allowing the Stadionbad to expand its sunbathing areas.

The Stadionbad gained significant popularity in 1931, being crowned the most popular outdoor pool in the Weser city. Over the years, it has undergone several major renovations, with the first significant overhaul taking place in 1954.

Today, the Stadionbad, operated by the Maas family since 1968, boasts a non-swimmer's pool, a 23-meter-long "turbo slide" with a free fall, and fully automatic water play facilities. The complex has also become a hub for various sports activities, with a "Day of Champions - Volleyball", a basketball competition, and a football tournament planned for the coming week.

On "Time Travel Day", personal stories, old photos, and shared memories will take centre stage. Those who bring something along on this day will enjoy free entry. A picture book titled "Summer, Sun, Swimming Pool - 100 Years of Stadionbad" will be presented during the family day.

The Stadionbad's rich history is deeply intertwined with the city of Bremen. The ABTS combat arena, a stadium with a large concrete tribune, was added next to the swimming pool in 1926, which later became the Weser Stadium, home to the city's beloved football club, Werder Bremen.

The Weser-Stadion association took over the operation of the Stadionbad in 1929. In more recent years, the pool has undergone extensive flood protection measures on the Weser bend between 2016 and 2017.

As the anniversary celebrations draw to a close, the Stadionbad will crown the winner of the three disciplines - volleyball, football, and basketball - as the Stadionbad Champion 2025. The ceremonial conclusion of the anniversary celebrations will take place on August 8th, exactly 100 years after the opening of the Stadionbad.

For those interested in delving deeper into the history of the Stadionbad, local archives and official records may provide more detailed information about the pool's construction, opening, renovations, and notable events.
