Castle Bothmer celebrates dual milestones this year.
Celebrating a Decade of Schloss Bothmer's Reopening: A Grand Anniversary
In the picturesque region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the grand Schloss Bothmer will commemorate its 10th anniversary since its reopening as a museum. The castle, built between 1726 and 1732 for Hans Caspar Graf von Bothmer, has a rich history that spans over two centuries.
After serving as the residence of the von Bothmer family, the castle was expropriated in 1945. From 1948 to 1995, it served as the headquarters of the Allies, a quarantine hospital, and an old people's home. In 1999, the castle was sold into private hands, but in 2008, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern took over its management.
The castle ensemble underwent a seven-year restoration process, meticulously restoring it to its former glory. Today, Schloss Bothmer and its park are a popular day trip destination, offering a glimpse into the region's history and culture.
On Sunday, August 24, 2025, the State Palaces, Gardens, and Art Collections of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will celebrate this milestone with a series of special events. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festivals, which celebrate their 35th anniversary in the same year, will also be part of the celebration.
Visitors can expect a variety of activities, including special exhibitions, guided tours, historical reenactments, cultural performances, workshops, and family-friendly programs. There may also be lectures about the history of Schloss Bothmer and its restoration, as well as festive celebrations such as concerts or gala events on the grounds.
One of the highlights of the anniversary celebrations is the Bothmer Open-Air event, featuring 22-year-old violinist María Dueñas. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, under the direction of Alan Gilbert, will accompany her during the event. The park will open three hours before the concert begins, allowing guests to picnic before the performance.
In addition, between 12 and 3 PM on August 24, Schloss Bothmer's park will transform into a "Living Museum." From 2 to 3 PM, visitors can learn to dance a minuet, while between 1 and 2 PM, "Awakened Garden Sounds" will be presented in the courtyard.
Admission to the castle museum will be free on August 24, making it an ideal opportunity for both locals and tourists to explore the castle's rich history. For those interested in attending the Bothmer Open-Air event, tickets can be purchased via the ticket hotline, online ticket shop, or on-site box office.
