Reinventing Altenburg's Castle Hill Museums: A Cultural Tourism Game Changer

Development Strategy: Altenburg Museums poised to serve as a 'Beacon' - Blueprint: Altenburg museums earmarked to serve as "navigational beacons"

Get ready to experience a transformation like no other on Altenburg's hilltop, as the city's museums are set to become a regional powerhouse in cultural tourism. Museum Director Roland Krischke, alongside Landrat Uwe Melzer (CDU) of the Altenburg district, and Altenburg's own Mayor André Neumann (CDU), have unveiled a master plan titled "Princes in the Sleeping Beauty Castle."

Their ambition? To craft a "Lindenau Campus" within the shadow of the castle walls, inspired by Bernhard August von Lindenau, founder of the Altenburg Lindenau Museum. Set in the 19th century, Lindenau established an art school that provided the foundation for the museum. This new campus stands to captivate audiences with "beacon" attractions, promising an educational experience that goes beyond the ordinary.

In the months to come, the castle museum and playing card collections will be seamlessly woven together, inviting visitors to explore an evocative tapestry of Altenburg's history. A new city history museum in the castle precinct is also being considered, tapping into private collections of citizens reminiscent of the city's hat-making glory days. Under the stewardship of a united team, these diverse institutions will rise anew. "Our objective is to elevate the profile of these hidden gems and boost marketing efforts," shares Museum Director Krischke.

The museum campus is poised to cater to a diverse audience, from academia and museum associations, all the way to schools and fellow aficionados of history. It's expected that digital learning resources will also feature prominently in this reimagined attraction.

Providing a passionate endorsement of the master plan, Landrat Melzer describes it as a labor of love. Both the Lindenau Museum and the Residenzschloss, owned by the district and the municipality, hold the key to elevating Altenburg and its economically challenged region to the rank of tourist hotspots. Mayor Neumann shares his enthusiasm for the immersive gaming experience starting to take shape in the old Josefinum, his ultimate goal being to present tangible evidence of progress before the state garden show in 2030.

However, the path to restoration is long and arduous, with a half-billion-euro backlog of repairs in the castle alone. Neumann emphasizes the humble capacity of the city to tackle such a monumental task, voicing confidence that the ideas and visions presented in the master plan will serve as a compelling case for future funding supporters. To fuel these renovation efforts, the aspiration is to transfer the castle property to a foundation, generating additional capital for restoration projects.

It seems the first step in this ambitious undertaking is the formation of a purpose association for the joint operation of the museums, as proposed by the Landrat, and here we shall gird our loins and begin!
