Blossoming Spectacle in Morocco: Over 150 Million Roses Emerge Each Spring in a Valley

In the heart of Morocco lies the Valley of Roses, a breathtaking expanse where over 150 million Damask roses bloom annually, making it the only place in the country where these precious flowers are cultivated. Amidst this enchanting landscape, Hafssa Chakibi, a former engineer with a PhD in physical chemistry, has launched her business, Flora Sina.

Each day, Hafssa picks between 10 and 20 kilos of roses during the harvesting process. The open flowers are carefully selected during the sorting process at her distillery. The women of the village are paid according to the quantity of roses they collect, and Hafssa's distillery employs dozens of these skilled workers.

The distillation process, which takes only an hour, is carried out using an ancient method called hydro-distillation. This traditional technique ensures the pure, natural rose water that Hafssa produces can be used in food and cosmetics. The rose water is renowned for its toning and healing properties for the skin.

In addition to rose water, Hafssa also produces essential oil and sells dried flowers. These exceptional products have gained recognition from perfumers in France and China within just five years.

Tourists from France, Spain, and Belgium have been captivated by the intense, slightly spicy and sweet perfume that fills the air at Hafssa's distillery. They come to witness the traditional methods used to extract the essence of roses and orange blossoms, which are also distilled at the facility.

Hafssa's distillery is more than just a business; it showcases the natural riches of Morocco to the world. Visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and the unique beauty of the Valley of Roses. It's a testament to Hafssa's dedication to preserving traditional methods while embracing the modern world.
