Spotting Birds in Berlin: Your Help Needed!

Berlin Calls for Bird Counting: Demand for Sparrow and Kingfisher Tally in Capital - Berlin residents advocated for a bird census

Berlin's urban landscape is teeming with avian residents, from peregrine falcons diving through the city skyline to the splashy kingfisher by the river. But how many different birds call Berlin home? That's what the Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV want to find out. During the "Hour of Garden Birds" event from May 9th to 11th, they're inviting Berliners to join in and count.

If you're in the city center, keep an eye out for the vibrant goldfinch with its red face and yellow wing stripes. Outskirts might offer a chance to spot the redstart, with its distinctive red tail. Even common species like sparrows or pigeons should be noted. Last year, a total of 36,000 birds were counted in Berlin.

Here's how you can help: Find a quiet spot in your garden, park, or even from a window and record the highest number of each species seen within an hour. Submit your results online, via app, or by post. Your observations can provide valuable insights into current bird trends, complementing official population data. Last year, 1,980 people participated in Berlin, so you're in good company!

Berlin's NABU groups are organizing several bird counts during the event. You can join them in the Lichtenberg district on May 11th at 9:00 AM in the Wartenberger field. For something more family-friendly, bring your kids to Rummelsburger Bucht on May 10th at 2:00 PM.

Remember, Berlin's bird life isn't just about the usual suspects. According to recent data, the area is also home to a variety of species, such as the osprey, common shelduck, black tern, great spotted woodpecker, and more. And while the exact bird count from the 2021 "Hour of Garden Birds" event isn't available, your participation can help build a more comprehensive picture of Berlin's bird population. So grab your binoculars and let's count birds together!
