Avignon Transforms into Hub for Aspiring Dramatists
Avignon, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and particularly its annual theater festival, is now home to two prominent institutions nurturing the next generation of comedic talents. The Higher School of Comic Arts (ESAR) and the International Jacques Lecoq Theatre School have made their mark in the city, providing a nurturing environment for aspiring artists.
Established by entrepreneur Frédéric Biessy, ESAR welcomed its first promotion in September 2024, taking up residence in the La Scala Provence premises. The school, which charges students 9,200 euros per year, has seen its students find work during the summer months as stagehands, at the box office, or as hosts for companies programmed in the "off."
One of the most exciting projects to emerge from ESAR is "The Threeman Show," a parody of a reality TV show where comedians are in competition. The show, created by three students from the first ESAR promotion – Belgian Vladimir Venanzi, French Aliocha Kasprzak, and Swiss Anthony Crettex – will be presented at the Théâtre de l'Observance.
The Lecoq institution, founded in 1956, is based in Paris but has recently relocated to Avignon, taking up residence in an old fire station provided by the Avignon municipality since October 2023. The school, known for its focus on physical theater, mime, and movement, has produced graduates such as Christoph Marthaler, Julie Deliquet, and Olivier Letellier.
Both schools share a sense of being in a "cocoon" or "bubble" within the walls of Avignon, allowing students to focus on their craft while immersed in the city's vibrant cultural scene. The Avignon Festival, which attracts artists and performers from around the world, offers a unique chance for students to engage with professionals in the field.
For those interested in comedy schools or programs in Avignon, it might be beneficial to contact local theater companies or educational institutions directly to inquire about their offerings. The city's rich cultural heritage and thriving theater scene make it an ideal location for aspiring comedians to hone their skills and launch their careers.
