In the heart of Benrath, a forward-thinking initiative is taking shape. Known as the "Hospital Street 1" project, this sustainable living concept is a joint venture between the municipal housing association (SWD) and AWO VITA gGmbH, with the goal of creating a community that seamlessly integrates sustainable living principles with social care, particularly for elderly residents.

The project, part of a broader initiative to develop affordable, sustainable, and socially inclusive residential areas, involves the construction of six multi-family houses with 91 apartments, scheduled for completion by 2023 on the grounds of the former Benrath Hospital.

At the heart of this initiative is a focus on promoting independence and care for elderly individuals in need. Two-thirds of the apartments are reserved for this specific purpose, with the remaining apartments available for interested tenants.

The "Hospital Street 1" project is designed to be sustainable and future-oriented, incorporating modular structures with optimized energy use and communal green spaces. This approach aims to reduce environmental impact while encouraging social engagement across generations.

The collaboration with AWO VITA gGmbH adds an element of professional care and social support within the community. The organisation will open a provider-managed residential community with 24/7 care, accommodating eight elderly people in need of care. This residential community is part of the multi-generational living project being implemented in Benrath, enabling tenants who require care to live independently in their own apartments.

The "Gemeinsam Leben" association played a pivotal role in the initiation of the "Hospital Street 1" project, spearheading its development from 2013 onwards. The "Gemeinsam Leben am Schloss Benrath" association's "Wohnprojekt Hospitalstraße 1" project is a close partner in shaping the concept, acquiring new tenants, and providing local services for the "Hospital Street 1" project.

As the "Hospital Street 1" project continues to take shape, it represents a promising model for sustainable, socially responsible urban living in Benrath. Balancing modular economical building methods, ecological considerations, and multi-generational community support with the engagement of partners like AWO VITA gGmbH, this project is poised to make a significant impact in the local community and beyond.
