Author Lecture on Monstrous Sea Waves and the Thrill-seekers Who Chase Them
Join Susan Casey, renowned journalist and author, at Birch Aquarium on Thursday, Nov. 17, for an enlightening lecture titled "In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean." The event takes place from 6:30-8 p.m.
Casey, known for her captivating works about the ocean and its powerful phenomena, will delve into her book "The Wave." This immersive narrative combines adventure, science, and personal stories to explore the science behind mammoth ocean waves that can tower more than 100-feet high.
During the lecture, Casey will share her experiences with extreme surfer Laird Hamilton and his crew as they embarked on a quest to ride and study these extraordinary natural events. The discussion will also cover scientists' efforts to understand the destructive powers of waves, such as the 2004 Pacific tsunami and the 1,740-foot-wave that affected the Alaskan coast.
Birch Aquarium, accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, is the perfect setting for this engaging event. The aquarium features over 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates from various Pacific regions and boasts nearly five-dozen interactive elements. It also serves as the public exploration center for the renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.
In addition, an interactive museum at Birch Aquarium showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, Earth, and ocean science. The aquarium has an annual attendance of over 415,000, including 45,000 school children.
After the presentation, a booksigning will follow, and books will be available for purchase or pre-purchase at the aquarium Gift Shop. To RSVP for this fascinating event, call 858-534-5771 or do so online. Don't miss this opportunity to delve into the world of the ocean's giants with Susan Casey!
