Artwork Depicting Marble Splashes
Discover a delightful and engaging art activity for children with our Marble Painting Art Activity. This hands-on craft, inspired by the free ABC Art Book from Playdough to Plato, encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and colour exploration.
Materials Needed
- White paper or cardstock (thick enough to hold paint)
- Marbles (small smooth balls)
- Washable paint in various colours
- Shallow tray or box with low sides (to contain the paper and marbles)
- Paint tray or palette
- Toothpicks or skewers for dotting paint on marbles (optional)
- Protective covering for the surface (newspaper or plastic sheet)
Step-by-step Guide
- Lay down the white paper inside the tray.
- Pour small amounts of washable paint onto a paint tray or palette.
- Dip a marble lightly into a chosen paint color.
- Place the painted marble into the tray with the paper.
- Tilt and gently roll the tray so the marble rolls over the paper, spreading and mixing paint to create a marbled effect.
- Repeat with different colored marbles to add varied colors and patterns.
- Optionally, use a toothpick to dot paint on marbles before rolling for extra design effects.
- Carefully remove the paper and let it dry flat.
Marble Rolling Technique
This method uses a marble rolling technique to create unique art with swirling patterns, making it suitable for kids due to simple materials and non-toxic paints.
Additional Materials and Variants
- Shaving cream mixed with paint can also be used for paper marbling, where kids swirl colours in shaving cream, press paper on top, and lift to reveal intricate designs.
- Clays in different colours can be twisted and rolled to make marbled shapes like coasters, as a related marble-like craft.

Real-life Examples
During our marble painting sessions, we've seen children like Mstr F work hard to cover their entire paper, finding it "really fun!". Miss E, on the other hand, used only three colours in her marble painting, which she loved. Miss L created an almost perfect grid shape design during the activity, with no diagonal lines.
Tips and Precautions
- A large deep baking dish or container is ideal for this activity. If concern arises about marbles escaping, a layer of plastic wrap can be placed over the top of the baking dish.
- Dots of paint were added at each side of the paper, and marbles were placed in them to start the painting process.
- A metal baking dish may make a loud noise every time a marble hits the side.
