Drinks and Discourse on Spiekeroog's Shores: Constanze Klar's Beach Bar for "Final Days" Debates
Artist constructs beachwater retreat for dialogue on impending apocalyptic events - Artist constructs a beachside tavern for series of discussions titled "End Times Talks"
Fancy a chat about the state of the world over a drink on the beach? That's exactly what artist Constanze Klar (45) is offering on the picturesque North Sea island of Spiekeroog. Klar, a Berlin-based artist, is using her temporary beach bar to stir up conversations and contemplation amongst holidaymakers and locals alike.
Klar is this year's winner of the Spiekeroog Tent Pitch Residency, an annual scholarship awarded for art projects tackling social or ecological issues. The residency sees artists living in tents in the dunes, about three kilometers from the island's village for a month. The residency ends on July 4th.
Now, you might think a beach bar and deep conversations about society's woes are odd bedfellows. Not in Klar's world. Her beach bar, constructed from salvaged cupboard walls, provides the perfect setting for quenching your thirst and engaging in sincere discussions about the current state of affairs - all the while watching the waves crash ashore on the East Frisian island.
The bar's moniker, "The end of the f. world," fittingly, portrays Klar's vision for the project. It's no secret that the political climate in Germany has left many feeling uneasy, with concerns around a shift to the right after the Union passed a migration policy resolution with support from the AfD earlier this year. Klar is also troubled by the societal divide, where people are excluded and devalued.
So, grab your preferred drink and take a seat at Constanze Klar's beach bar. Not only will you quench your thirst, but with her consent, she might also record your conversation for an upcoming animation featuring clay figures, set to be displayed on the island in early July.
