In the small town of Picanya, Valencia, Spain, Susana Pérez and her family experienced the devastating effects of flash floods on October 29, 2021. The heavy rainfall caused by a high-level atmospheric depression (DANA) resulted in widespread destruction, including the flooding of their home.

The floodwater filled the family's garage up to the ceiling and reached about 70 cm on the first floor. The force of the water was so strong that it burst open the garage doors. For several days, they were without electricity, telephone, or data services. The telephone network was almost non-functional during the flood, making communication difficult.

Despite these challenges, Susana Pérez saw a silver lining in the aftermath of the flood. She witnessed God's love being reflected in the actions of many people. Strangers and friends came to help, bringing food, tools, and prayers. The family was grateful for this outpouring of support during a difficult time.

In an interview published in Evangelical Focus - European perspectives, Susana Pérez stated, "As God's creatures, we can reflect God's love to others." She believes that the love she experienced during the flood was a love that gives without expecting anything in return. Susana Pérez sees the source of this love as God himself.

The emergency services were overloaded during the flood, and there were criticisms of delayed responses. However, authorities have since improved alert systems to prevent further fatalities. The community and government efforts to clean up, support victims, and enhance future flood resilience are ongoing. Rehabilitation plans and strategies to improve resilience against similar future events have been pursued, including urban planning and infrastructure design improvements.

Susana Pérez's story serves as a reminder of the power of community and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. In a world that often seems divided, her experience shows us that there is still hope for compassion and love to prevail.

For those who wish to join Susana Pérez in her mission to reflect God's love to others, more information about the #OneMoreYearEF campaign can be found on the Evangelical Focus website. Together, we can make a difference and create a more loving, compassionate world.

Home-and-garden supplies were required by Susana Pérez and her family to repair the flooded sections of their house. A lifestyle of compassion and generosity was demonstrated by the community who rallied together to support Susana's family and others affected by the flood.
