In a bid to reduce carbon emissions and achieve renewable energy targets, Amazon is taking a multi-faceted approach. The tech giant, which operates on an unprecedented scale with over 1.5 million employees and the capability to deliver over 1,000 packages per minute worldwide, is making strides in greener technology deployment.

Central to Amazon's strategy is the electrification of its delivery fleet. The company aims to operate at least 100,000 electric delivery vans by 2030, a significant increase from the current 31,000 electric vehicles in its fleet. This ambitious plan includes meeting its target of deploying 10,000 EVs in India ahead of schedule.

Amazon is also investing heavily in renewable energy to power its devices and data centers. The company matches 100% of the energy used by devices like Echo, Fire TV, and Ring with renewable energy purchases. Despite the increased energy demand from the expansion of AI-powered data centers and the growing logistics network, Amazon's data centers operated by AWS demonstrated energy efficiency with a power use effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15.

However, Amazon's overall carbon emissions increased from 64.38 million MTCO2e in 2023 to 68.25 MTCO2e in 2024. This rise can be attributed to the growth in AI-driven data centers and the expanding logistics network. Yet, Amazon's carbon intensity per dollar of merchandise sold has improved, indicating better emissions efficiency.

The company's sustainability approach will continue to evolve with technological and operational challenges and opportunities. This includes ongoing investments and innovation in sustainability practices to fulfill its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

Amazon's 2024 Sustainability Report also addresses waste reduction. The company improved landfill diversion to 85%, a significant step towards maximizing waste management. Moreover, Amazon reduced single-use plastic packaging by 16.4% in 2024.

Amazon's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its operations. The company encourages group action to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 with The Climate Pledge, a commitment it co-founded. The Climate Pledge currently has 549 signatories, encouraging industry-wide sustainability efforts towards net-zero emissions by 2040.

Amazon is also making strides in affordable housing investments. In the US, the company has invested in over 35,000 homes (ongoing target of 3.6 billion).

In summary, Amazon's approach to reducing carbon emissions and achieving renewable energy targets involves electrifying its delivery fleet, increasing renewable energy procurement, investing heavily in sustainable infrastructure, continuously evolving its sustainability strategy, and addressing waste reduction. This multi-faceted strategy reflects progress in greener technology deployment amid operational growth challenges.
